Shelly L. Beaver, MS, CTRS earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2001 and Master of Science degree in Leisure Studies in 2003 from the Pennsylvania State University. She is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and has clinical experience in long term care, mental health and physical rehabilitation settings. In addition, Shelly is employed as a program coordinator and part-time lecturer at Penn State Altoona teaching courses based in recreation and disability studies.
Most recently, Shelly developed and facilitated Sense-ational Endeavors, a recreation program for children with autism spectrum disorders in conjunction with Penn State Altoona. She received the National Rehab Week Advocate Congressional Award for the program in September 2011.
Her professional interests include disability awareness and advocacy, the meaning of play through the life span, and the effect of recreation-based approaches in school-aged children with disabilities, particularly autism spectrum disorders.
